How we do it

Check what's underground

We ask about cables, pipes and drains, and scan where we can. The grinder goes nowhere near a live service.

Grind it out

A tracked grinder fits through a standard side gate and chews the stump down to 200 to 300 mm below ground, surface roots included.

Backfill and level

The hole is filled with the grindings and soil and raked level with the lawn.

Turf or plant

The grindings settle for a few weeks. After that you can turf, seed or plant.

How deep do you grind?+

Usually 200 to 300 mm below the surface, deeper where a fence post or foundations are going in. Tell us what the spot is for and we grind to suit.

Will it grow back?+

For most trees, no: once the stump is gone the roots die off. A few species, like poplar and some cherries, can sucker from roots further out, and we'll warn you if yours is one.

Can you grind a stump near a wall or fence?+

Usually, yes: the cutting wheel can work right up to the base of a wall. Pipes and cables are the thing to tell us about.
