On the Kent and Surrey border, where the River Eden winds through low, wet clay country with Hever and Chiddingstone just down the road.
Edenbridge
Edenbridge grew up where the old road crossed the River Eden, and its long High Street still has timber-framed buildings from those days. The valley floor around it is low and heavy clay, the kind of ground that floods in winter and cracks in summer.
That clay matters for trees near houses. In a dry year a big willow, oak or poplar can draw enough water out of shrinkable clay to move foundations; in a wet one, saturated ground gives roots less grip in a gale. Both are good reasons to keep larger trees near buildings in proportion.
Along the Eden and its ditches, willow and alder grow quickly and lean out over the water towards the light. A regular cycle of reduction or pollarding stops them splitting and falling in.

Sevenoaks District Council
Edenbridge can feel a long way from Sevenoaks, but it's in the same district, and Sevenoaks District Council handles its preservation orders and the conservation area along the High Street. Much of the countryside around is Green Belt, which doesn't stop tree work but does mean protected trees are common. We check the status before every quote.
Services in Edenbridge
Reducing willows, oaks and poplars near houses on clay, including work set out in an insurer's subsidence report.
→Removing unstable riverside trees, and trees that have outgrown small town gardens, in rigged sections.
→Grinding stumps on soft, wet ground with tracked machines that won't rut the lawn.
→Clearing trees and limbs that come down when the valley is waterlogged and the wind gets up.
→Cutting back field hedges and garden boundaries along the lanes out towards Hever and Marsh Green.
→Common here
We don't drive machinery across waterlogged lawns. In a wet winter on Edenbridge clay, that can mean ground boards or waiting for a drier spell.
