Paddock Wood

Windbreaks and new streets.

Paddock Wood grew up around its railway station in the middle of hop country, and the oast houses dotted around it, with the Hop Farm at Beltring just up the road, still tell that story. The land is flat, the soil is heavy Weald Clay, and the weather comes straight across it.

Orchards and hop gardens here were sheltered by tall windbreaks of poplar and alder, planted to grow fast and close together. Many have outgrown their purpose, and where new homes have gone up alongside them, a long line of tall poplars can end up at the bottom of someone's garden.

With big new neighbourhoods being added around the town, there is plenty of new-garden work as well: hedges to keep in check, stumps to clear and young trees to keep in proportion.

Questions

Asked in Paddock Wood.

Can you take out part of a windbreak and leave the rest?+
Yes, but it needs planning. Trees that grew up sheltered by their neighbours can be vulnerable to wind once they're exposed, so we look at the whole line before taking any out.
Is the ground too soft for machines in winter?+
Weald Clay gets very soft when it's wet. We use tracked machines and ground boards, and for some jobs we'll suggest waiting for a drier spell.
