A walled city with a World Heritage cathedral at its heart, old gardens behind its streets and ancient woodland on its doorstep.
Canterbury
Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church together form a World Heritage Site, and much of the city around them is conservation area. Walled gardens, listed buildings and tight lanes mean tree work here is mostly about precision: how something comes down matters as much as what gets cut.
The city's trees are part of its history. In Westgate Gardens, beside the Great Stour, a plane tree around two hundred years old is said to have grown around an iron seat that once circled its trunk. Dane John Gardens and the line of the city walls add more mature cover in the centre.
North of the city, the Blean is one of the largest areas of ancient woodland in southern England, and many outlying villages sit right against it. Big oaks, sweet chestnut and hornbeam on garden boundaries are a feature of that side of Canterbury.

Canterbury City Council
Canterbury City Council handles preservation orders and conservation areas for the city, and for Whitstable and Herne Bay. In the historic centre, assume consent is needed until we've checked. Next to a listed building or the city wall, which is a scheduled monument, we also plan the rigging so nothing touches the structure.
Services in Canterbury
Thinning and reduction of mature trees in conservation-area gardens, specified for the council and done by hand saw where it matters.
→Dismantling trees in walled gardens, with every section lowered on ropes clear of walls and roofs.
→Grinding stumps out of courtyards and small gardens with compact machines that fit through a narrow gate.
→Shaping yew, box and holly in old city gardens, and keeping suburban boundary hedges in check.
→Canterbury is a longer drive for us than mid-Kent, but storm damage gets priority wherever it is.
→Common here
Because Canterbury is a longer drive from our base, we group jobs there on set days, which keeps the price down. Emergencies are the exception.
