Two very different places side by side: a Georgian market town full of walled gardens, and a new community built on a wartime airfield.
West Malling
West Malling's High Street is lined with Georgian frontages, with the Norman St Leonard's Tower and Malling Abbey close by. Behind the street are walled gardens and old trees, and on the edge of the town Manor Park Country Park sets a lake among mature parkland trees.
Next door, Kings Hill has been built on the former RAF West Malling airfield. Its gardens are younger and more open, with fast boundary hedges, young ornamental trees and the occasional mature tree kept from before.
So a day's work here can mean lowering sections of an old lime over a listed wall in the morning, and cutting a leylandii hedge down to size in a modern close in the afternoon.

Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council
West Malling and Kings Hill both come under Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council. The old town is a conservation area, so most tree work there needs six weeks' notice. On Kings Hill, the thing to check is whether any preservation orders or planning conditions were carried over from the development. We look up both before pricing the job.
Services in West Malling
Careful reduction of mature trees in West Malling's walled gardens, with the conservation-area notice taken care of.
→Bringing Kings Hill boundary hedges back to height, then keeping them there with a yearly cut.
→Grinding out stumps on newer plots so the garden can be relaid level.
→Sectional removal of failing trees over walls, roofs and outbuildings in the old town.
→Clearing fallen limbs from the more exposed, open ground on Kings Hill after strong winds.
→Common here
Old walls and tree roots often grow up together. When a tree beside a historic wall comes out, we leave the roots in the ground unless an engineer says otherwise.
